چکیده

We established the Arctic System Science/Thermokarst (ARCSS/TK) project in 2008 with the intent to use a systems approach to address hypotheses about how upland thermo-erosional features influence the structure and function of the foothill and mountainous landscape in the vicinity of the Brooks Range in arctic Alaska. We found that the common thermo-erosional features in this region are thaw slumps, thermo-erosional gullies, and active layer detachment slides. These features significantly redistribute and reduce soil carbon and nutrients. Sediments and nutrients are exported from thermo-erosional features and may impact streams and lakes. In general, productivity was greater in streams and lakes influenced by thermokarst inputs; that is, nutrient stimulation outweighed sediment interference. In either case, however, these effects are transitory on the timescale over which these thermo-erosional features form, stabilize, and revegetate. Our estimate of the rates at which carbon and nutrients accumulate after these thermo-erosional features stabilize is much faster based on field measurements than our estimates based on model predictions, suggesting that alternative sources of C and nutrients must be available. These features are numerous in the current landscape (~4/km2 in the area of this study) and are likely to be important as agents of nutrient redistribution across the arctic landscape.

The Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran

Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...

Using the Component Model of Sustainable Landscape for the Quality Assessment of Urban Natural Public Spaces: A Case Study from Tehran’s River-valleys

Ecological destruction in human-dominated landscapes has significant impacts on environment sustainability internationally. Landscape planning can play a role in mitigating the effects of human-related activities. One element of landscape planning involves the analysis of the biological, spatial and social arrangement of areas in an urban environment and identifying characteristics that are und...

Assessment of Range Health Changes in Zagros Semi-Arid Rangelands, Iran (Case Study: Chalghafa- Semirom-Isfahan)

Rangeland health assessment provides qualitative information on ecosystemattributes. We examined changes in rangeland health in the Zagros semi-arid rangelands ofIran at fixed sites between 2001 and 2011, over the 10-year period. The rangelandfragments significantly declines in the quality of the vegetation, and changes in plantspecies were driven largely by seasonality, and to a lesser extent,...

I-15: Effects of Oxidative Stress on Sperm Function

Semen analysis is the frontline and old reliable test in the assessment of male fertility, but it failed to provide absolute prediction of sperm function and its fertilizing ability. A wide variety of internal and external factors affect sperm function without discernible and significant effects on semen analysis. Oxygen toxicity and oxidative stress (OS) are inherent challenge of living cells ...
